All Inclusive Resorts

Hi there,
I am a virgin traveler when it comes to all-inclusive trips...... My family (3 adults, 1 male 13 yo, and 1y/o infant) are planning on a trip to Cancun this August 2009 around the 18th. I would appreciate and advice on where to stay, excursions (i.e. where to go, buy online or wait til get there, etc.).

My initial plans are staying at one of the Palace resorts due to the fact that they have the tour passport free at this time. I would definately appreciate any advice given.

Thanks

Hi

You seem to be on the right track with the Palace resorts. They are very nice and highly rated. The Cancun Palace is probably my top choice since you can't go to the Sun Palace which is couples only. Any deals you can find would certainly sway the choice as most Cancun resorts are in stiff competition for a limited amount of visitors.

Another place to consider is the Club Med Cancun Yucatan. It is often ranked higher than the Palace resorts, but we all have our own expectations and needs so I don't put too much stock into the various rankings available. The pool is a little small (with a new one being added this fall), but the beach is one of the best in Cancun.

A few things to consider with your 13 year old and your infant. Ask in advance what the age limits are for the kid's clubs. Many resorts have a 4 - 12 year old range. Ask in advance if the rooms are carpeted or marble/tile. Slips/falls/ouches happen less often on carpeted rooms. Take a few rubber bands (or something) along to baby proof the mini-fridge and balcony doors.

One of my favorite tips I have seen on this site is to take along some walkie talkies. With a larger group like yours, it would be nice to be able to communicate with each other easily.

As far as excusions, I would do as much research as you can before you go. Once you make a reservation, ask your resort if they offer any deals or free day trips to the local attractions. Cancun Wet and Wild is a waterpark with dolphin swim. There is a boat tour of nearby islands which would get you out on the water. There are plenty of tours going south to Playa del Carmen and the ruins of Tulum. Honestly, I wouldn't do any of the day trips. The waterpark is nothing special and the ruins are not worth the day trip all the way down to Tulum. Playa del Carmen has a nice pedestrian mall with shops and restaurants, but you've already paid for your food and drinks at your resort.

Hope this helps. Have a great vacation!
