All Inclusive Resorts

Is there such a thing as a mom-and-pop all-inclusive resort? I prefer to spend my money with smaller business owners rather than the super huge mega-corporations.

From what I have seen, the small all inclusive resorts still seemed to be owned by the big all inclusive chains or are set up as super luxury boutique resorts that are out of most of our price ranges.

If you want the small local owner, you are better off going with a small privately owned resort where you can search out and patronize the local restaurants and bars. I like these types of vacations because I get to try lots of different places and I feel like more of my money is going into the local economy. There is also something to be said about being at an all inclusive resort where there is no need to search for good local restaurants and bars. It also can be difficult to find local resort owners who can deliver the quality of service most all inclusive resorts provide.

On the other hand James, there are the small but still prevalent small locally owned all-inclusives such as Franklyn D. Resort & Spa in Runaway Bay, Jamaica; FDR Pebbles, Falmouth Jamaica and Coyaba Resort, Montego Bay Jamaica - all of which are locally owned, small boutique hotels and not five stars. They are very down-to-earth resorts with a real Jamaican feel. The staff are wonderful and not as tight lipped as you would find at the Big Chains. Although they have restaurants on property, they still encourage you to visit local restaurants and shops and FDR actually has a free shopping trip to Ocho Rios to the Local Craft Market.

Thanks, Pauline. Have you personally stayed at an FDR resort, and if so, how does it rank when compared to other family-friendly all-inclusives with which you're familiar? I'm hoping to find an all-inclusive for my family that has a lot of flexibility in terms of optional add-ons (i.e. drinks included/not, watersports included/not, etc.). I really don't want to be paying for activities that the whole family will not be using. (See my other discussion thread on a-la-carte all-inclusives...) Thanks again!

Hi - While not exactly mom and pop owned, here is a list of some of the smaller all inclusive resorts.
